Rusty's Story--Faces of Distracted Driving
On May 18, 2008, my son, John Travis Gordon, “Rusty,” was killed by a texting driver in Marion County, OH. Since his death, I have become a victim advocate with the hopes that I will be able to make a difference in the lives of those who currently choose to engage in distracted driving. I do not want to see others endure the pain and suffering that my wife, grandkids, daughter-in-law and I have gone through.
In 2011, I addressed the Ohio State Senate as a victim advocate so they would understand the dangers and pass a Texting and Driving law for the State of Ohio. In 2012, while attending a seminar in Washington, D.C., my wife and I recorded a video for the National Department of Transportation and the National Transportation Safety Board entitled “Faces of Distraction, John T. Gordon, 35.” This video can be seen on “YouTube.”
To date, I have presented “Rusty’s Story” to more than 27,000 students throughout Central Ohio. In July 2012, I was welcomed by the State Teen Institute as a guest speaker during their state convention at Kenyon College for the past several years.
Texting and Driving has become the number one killer of teenagers. Will you take the pledge to not Text and Drive? Nobody wants to go to your funeral because you were texting and driving.
