Are your students ready for the Monster Exchange?

Monster Exchange is designed to encourage the development of reading and writing skills while integrating internet and videoconferencing technology into the classroom curriculum. 

If you decide to participate, your class will be split into groups, each of which will be partnered with a group from another school.  Each group will design an original picture of a monster.  The students will then write a description of their monster.  The partnered groups will exchange their descriptions on the project website. 

The groups will use reading comprehension skills to translate the description into a monster picture. The true challenge involves creating a redrawn picture as close to the original picture based on the written description without looking at the picture drawn by the partner group.

This project will consist of 2 videoconferences:

  • 1st connection will be a “Meet and Greet.”  Students will meet their project partners.
  • 2nd connection the students will share their descriptions with pictures.

Between videoconferencing connections all work will be done in the classroom.

This project is an adaptation of the international Monster Exchange project (http://www.monsterexchange.org).

The Monster Exchange addresses Ohio English/Language Arts content standards.

Hey, Katrina!
Can you draw my monster based on the description below?

Draw a red apple that is 3 inches tall and 2 inches wide. Put a one-half inch long and one-sixteenth inch wide brown stem that slightly angles to the right in the apple's indent at the top. Add to the left of the stem a green leaf that is slightly taller than the stem and one-eight inch wide. The leaf should be slightly angled to the left.

I used sticks for arms and legs. The legs extend out of the bottom of the apple and are one and one-half inches long. The feet are Vs turned upside down.

The stick arms are one and one-fourth inches long and connect to the monster's body at the center on each side. The arms angle up at a 45 degree angle from the body. The fingers are Vs.
